Fortitude: Courage and Toughness
Courage can take the form of the firefighter rushing into a burning building to save those who would otherwise perish in flames, but it is not it’s only form.
Courage is also facing those things that you turn away from for fear of the unknown, or a consequence that lives large in your head. The source of that fear may be real, but where we lack courage in smaller things, it is more often than not something that is alive only because you keep it alive in your mind.
Having the ability to face your fears requires a certain toughness, and if courage is hard to muster up, perhaps the first step is build one’s toughness. Toughness can be and is the product summoning the will to do something, and keeping at it despite the pain or difficulty in so doing. Work on growing in toughness, and courage will come in time.
Finally there is fortitude, the combination of courage and toughness.
Strength of mind that enables a person to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage.
Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven, I pray that you grant me the grace of your Holy Spirit to build within me fortitude. Fortitude to do that which I should do, bringing honor to You Lord God in so doing. Amen
